Motion design for UMCNL’s rebrand + visual identity for UMCNL Connect.

Main brand animation and UMCNL Connect visual identity by Remco van Baren
UMCNL, formerly known as NFU, represents the seven university medical centres in the Netherlands. Together, they combine patient care, research and education, working on questions that range from complex individual treatments to the health of society as a whole. As the organisation began taking a more active role in connecting these centres and their partners, it needed a name and visual identity that reflected this direction. Makepublic worked on the rebrand, giving UMCNL a fresh appearance and a clearer shared presence.
As part of the team at Makepublic, I created all the animations for the new identity. My contribution focused on translating the visual language developed by the team into motion, bringing its elements together in an animated introduction to UMCNL. Alongside this work, I designed the visual identity for UMCNL Connect, an event where colleagues from across the university medical centres meet to exchange knowledge, discuss shared challenges and explore ways of working together. Both parts of the project involved working with the same visual foundations, each with a different purpose.
The starting point for the main illustration was the cross used in the new UMCNL identity. I developed this into a square compass, with lines meeting and crossing around a shared centre. The shape refers to people coming together from different directions and finding a direction together. It functions as a recurring graphic element alongside the event logo, appearing in different sizes and crops throughout the designs.
Working across these formats meant considering how the identity would hold together throughout the event, from an invitation in someone’s inbox to the screens and signage at the venue. The repeated shapes and colours connect those moments, while leaving space for the practical information each application needs.
