///Redditor's (SP?) Dictionary
Words Redditor's Aren't Sure How to Spell.
Typographic Dataset Publication, 2022
Design by Remco van Baren
In collaboration with Colin Morris
In this publication, I used Colin Morris' dataset, which analyzes words Redditors are uncertain about how to spell, to data merge the information into a compact dictionary. The dictionary showcases the various ways forum users write words, occasionally resulting in fascinating transmutations.
Replacing each instance of "(sp?)" with a custom glyph, represents the idea of not looking up the word but implementing it in the post.
This pocket-sized response is inspired by the intriguing behavior of Redditors that often use "(sp?)" to check their spelling rather than looking up the correct spelling. It highlights the tendency of relying on the community for spelling checks, as if they are in a rush to post or daring to be vulnerable in an open forum. The dictionary features examples of word usages in posts, offering insights and opinions. With pages filled with various spellings of the same word, such as Adderall spelled ten different ways accompanied by ten examples, the dictionary provides an engaging experience for readers.
Included in this publication is a navigational aid on the side, visible when flipping open the back part of the cover. This publication serves as an objective exploration of the information within, highlighting the fascinating world of spelling uncertainties on Reddit.
